We at EDC Lancaster County applaud the Commonwealth’s effort to create the new Ten-Year Strategic Plan for Economic Development in Pennsylvania – the first state-wide economic development strategy put forth in more than 20 years.

In recognizing Pennsylvania’s need for an intentional approach to economic development, this plan does well to address where previous efforts have fallen short as well as where we have great opportunity for advancement. For starters, the State plan highlights five industries that will help drive our economy forward if we support and fund technology and innovation:

  • Agriculture
  • Energy
  • Life Sciences
  • Manufacturing
  • Robotics & Technology

You’ll find plenty of examples of companies in these targeted industries here in Lancaster County, many of which are key employers for local residents: Wenger Feeds, Kreider Farms, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, WK Kellogg Co., Mars, CNH, Fenner Precision Polymers, Precision Cobotics, and so many more.

The Ten-Year Strategic Plan further highlights a set of Strategic Initiatives that cross a range of economic and community development opportunities and challenges that we see across Lancaster County and the Commonwealth. Some of these initiatives include:

  • Boosting State investment in site development, preparedness and marketing
  • Expanding support for small businesses with a focus on historically disadvantaged enterprises
  • Increasing funding for Pennsylvania’s economic development programs
  • Investing in tourism and recreation asset development
  • Addressing both red tape and permitting processes across State agencies
  • Improving the workforce development delivery mode
  • Creating the Pennsylvania Regional Challenge to promote regional capacity building
  • Investing in Downtowns and Main Streets
  • Expanding the availability of housing

We believe that the Commonwealth’s willingness to make meaningful investments in these initiatives and address structural issues that impact community and economic development projects will not only lead to opportunities for business growth here in Lancaster County, but will also help to herald in a brighter economic future across Pennsylvania.
